Q: How do I know if I am eligible for Right Track?
A. Right Track serves youth who are Saint Paul residents, ages 14 to 21 who are from a low-income household or have a barrier to employment.
Q: How do I know if I am from a low-income family or have a barrier to employment?
A. Generally youth who receive free or reduced price lunch, food stamps, section 8 housing etc. would be considered low-income. Barriers to employment include disabilities, youth who are juvenile offenders, are pregnant or parenting, etc. Click here to view the Right Track income guidelines and barriers to employment.
Q: How old do I have to be to apply?
A. For YJ01, youth must be at least 14 years old and no older than 21 by June 12. For YJ02, youth must be at least 16 years old and no older than 21 by April 1.
Q: What if I just go to school in Saint Paul but don’t live in Saint Paul? Am I still eligible for Right Track?
A. No. Right Track is for Saint Paul residents only. Youth who live outside of Saint Paul are encouraged to check out the City’s other job opportunities.
Q: How do I apply for Right Track?
A. Right Track applications for summer employment will be available beginning February 1. Interested individuals must apply online before the end of the day on February 28. You must apply online during this time period to be eligible for summer employment.
Q: What kind of work might I do?
A. Right Track offers two major programs, each with a separate application. Youth can only apply to only one program.
Right Track YJ01 offers a variety of jobs for youth in recreation and community centers, pools, libraries, gardening, construction, video production, and more. YJ01 jobs may be with organizations like Saint Paul Parks & Recreation, the Science Museum of MN, YWCA, Youth Express, Urban Roots, and more.
Right Track YJ02 offers paid internships in business, management, administration, finance, healthcare, law and more. YJ02 internships are with some of Saint Paul’s largest employers, including U.S. Bank, Xcel Energy, Region’s Hospital, the State of Minnesota, and more. Youth must be at least 16 years old by April 1 to be eligible for YJ02.
Q: I submitted my application for Right Track. Did I get a job?
A. Not yet. You will receive more information about next steps for your application after March 1. Both Right Track YJ01 and YJ02 have different hiring processes which you are required to follow. Both programs require you to interview. Click to view the hiring timeline for YJ01 and YJ02.
Q: When do summer jobs and internships start?
A. Most Right Track summer jobs will begin on June 19. Jobs will last 6 to 9 weeks depending on the position.
Q: How much will I get paid and how many hours will I work?
A. It depends on the position. All Right Track YJ01 jobs pay $9.50 / hour and are an average of 15 hours per week. Right Track YJ02 internships pay a minimum of $9.50 per hour up to $14+ per hour. YJ02 interns work anywhere from 15 to 40 hours per week depending on the position.
Q: When will I know if I’ve been hired for a Right Track YJ01 job or YJ02 internship?
A. Youth who applied for Right Track YJ01 will be notified if they’ve been hired the week of May 1. Youth who applied for Right Track YJ02 will be notified if they’re been hired the week of April 17.
